• For most of you, troubled days are already over, your black list users are on vacation and things are starting to slow down.
  • Other admins are under fire, on one hand trying to catch up with to-dos so that new equipment is approved for next year’s budget.  On the other hand, stuck with a frustrated user who needs their problem taken care of quickly so that they can go catch that flight to a Christmas family reunion.
  • The luckiest are those already on vacation and will be coming back to work next year.

To avoid  network headaches this holiday season:

Don’t  assume users will secure their systems.
It is important for network administrators to have resources that can identify user activities that can potentially lead to security problems. A user might connect an infected computer to the network or be using unauthorized applications.
Take advantage of important information already at your disposal.
If you are using a CISCO router/switch, there is a good chance your device can export NetFlow data. This information can help you easily track active applications on the network. Aggregate this data into your Netflow Collector so that you can get real-time statistics on application activity and resolve any problems.
Don’t mistake a network issue for an application malfunction.
To pinpoint network problems, it is critical to analyze and isolate issues that have to do with both the network and application performance.
Usually users blame the network when things are running slow on their computer.
