NetFlow has come a long way in the last few years.  For example, here’s a list of some new information that can now be monitored and filtered on by exporting NetFlow or IPFIX packets from your routers, switches, and firewalls.

•    Medianet
•    Host/Application Latency
•    VoIP with Caller ID
•    Configuring Cisco ASA NetFlow Exports
•    NBAR
•    URLs
•    Mac Address and VLAN

Now that’s a whole lot of information that you can get from your NetFlow Analyzer!

So what is all this new information?

Medianet & Host/Application Latency

At least three different hardware vendors are exporting latency information in NetFlow or IPFIX packets.  SonicWALL, nBox, and Cisco’s Performance Monitoring are the only three we can make public, however, more are on the way.

VoIP with Caller ID

This is available from the SonicWALL and the nBox from

nBox NetFlow Probe Caller ID

And Cisco has plans to export Caller ID information in NBAR2.

Configuring Cisco ASA NetFlow Exports

Do you have Cisco ASAs in your network?  Want to get NetFlow from them?  Then this webcast on configuring Cisco ASA NetFlow exports may interest you.

Do I have your attention yet?  Well, there’s more to come in my next blog on NBAR, URLs, Mac Address and VLAN information.  If you can’t wait, then give us a call at 207-324-8805 and we’d be happy to go over this with you personally.
