Posted in NetFlow, NetFlow Analyzer on April 13th, 2010 by Jon Mills

According to PGP Corporation and the Ponemon Institute, the average cost per security breach increased by $100K from 2008 to 2009, however the number of reported breaches dropped by 159. The reason for the drop in reportings is likely a result of training and awareness programs. Also, the use of encryption is up 44 percent over 2008.

The effort to prevent data loss is a top priority for many organizations. Identifying odd traffic patterns and suspicious data transfers has become a concern for many data security professionals. Flow Analytics, an add on to our NetFlow collector, allows administrators to detect odd traffic patterns, such as servers communicating to unauthorized hosts on the Internet.

A well constructed saved filter can provide the following:

Maybe its because I’ve always been a “support guy”. Maybe it’s because I’ve never been to a “How to be an effective salesman” seminar. I know that I’m not an exemplary seller.

I remember once working at an electronic retail store when I was 17. There was this lady coming in and looking at the cutting edge 900mhz cordless phones that had just come out. The lady was looking at this specific Sony model and the phone was on sale for $79.99.

She was contemplating the purchase, when my conscience got the best of me:

Hello all, today I’m going to tell you about one of my favorite features in Scrutinizer that helps aid in NetFlow traffic monitoring; the MyView dashboard.  The MyView page is a fully customizable dashboard that allows each user to have their own unique view of what’s happening on the network which allows administrators to be proactive instead of reactive.

A lot of the calls we receive these days seem to center around the topic of Cisco ASA’s. And that’s definitely a good thing. You see, we always welcome the opportunity to talk about our NetFlow Analysis tool, and the unique abilities it provides Network Administrators when it comes to network traffic analysis.

Not long ago I wrote a blog explaining how you can use NetFlow from Cisco ASA devices to provide network traffic analysis.

But did you ever hear the the term, “a picture is worth a thousand words?”

Watch the 5 minute webcast below to see how Scrutinizer v7 processes NetFlow from the ASA:

Interface ’0′ – What does it mean to you and your NetFlow stream?

I love that title. It sounds so dramatic.

I’ve been seeing this issue lately and I think it’s worth talking about, since I can imagine it affects the way you see flows within just about any NetFlow traffic analyzer.

Within a NetFlow v5 packet, there are two rows that define the inbound and the outbound interface for every conversation. Those interface numbers are really just the ifindex interface ID assigned by your router.

The inbound/outbound interface fields are crucial to being able to calculate where your traffic stream is going.

Lets look at a couple screenshots:
