Cisco Nexus 7000 supporting Flexible NetFlow
Posted in NetFlow on October 19th, 2009 by mike@plixer.comOne of our customers recently invested in a Cisco Nexus 7000. Raul (Plixer Field Engineer) visited the customer last month and had his picture taken in front of the switch just after it was installed:
Why Datacenter Customers should Invest in Flexible NetFlow on the Nexus:
- System scalability of up to 500,000 (with 95 percent
utilization efficiency) cached flows for forwarding
engine - Effective hardware-based sampling to improve
NetFlow table utilization - Capability to create and track bridged IP flows
Support for NetFlow Export Version 5 (the most used)
and NetFlow Export Version 9 (the most flexible) - Sampled NetFlow: (similar to sFlow) Effective hardware-based sampling to improve and preserve NetFlow table utilization;
capability to implement full NetFlow on critical
interfaces while implementing sampled NetFlow on
other, less critical network portions - Egress NetFlow and Bridged NetFlow: Useful to track
flows within a VLAN - TCP flags: Now exported as part of the flow information;
very useful in understanding TCP flow directions and
detecting denial-of-service (DoS) attacks
Scrutinizer v7 supports Flexible NetFlow.

Hi Mike,
Are we able to use Scrutinizer to view the 1200 byte packet exports from Flexible NetFlow? How can I setup Scrutinizer to view the key fields that I would like to export using Flexible NetFlow?
Thank you,
VirtualChris
If you are using Scrutinizer v7, you don’t have to setup anything as this version supports Flexible NetFlow. In the status tab, expand the router on the left in Device Explorer and click on Flow Templates. Click on “Flow View” and you will see the data if it occured within the most recent hour.
NOTE: 1200 bytes of sampled packet will not be decoded. I’m sure this is what you want but, Flexible NetFlow doesn’t send us the template to decode it. If you send me a wireshark capture of this data, I’ll see what I can do.
