Username NetFlow Reporting

Username NetFlow Reporting is a hot topic since the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) report in late May. By 2016, Cisco’s forecast predicts that there will be “nearly three networked devices per capita”  Naturally, people are asking “Who is authenticating all of these devices onto the network?” Read more »

Network Behavior Analysis : Business Internet Security Systems

Network Behavior Analysis : Business Internet Security Systems

Most companies agree that business Internet security systems are a paramount concern.  Relying on traditional security efforts such as firewalls and antivirus software are not going to perform a very important emerging security detection technique called network behavior analysis.  To leverage this internal security measure, network administrators need to collect and analyze NetFlow or IPFIX from existing routers and switches.  And here’s some good news: firmware upgrades are usually not needed to take advantage of flow technology.

SonicWALL NetFlow Reporting : IPFIX Support

SonicWALL NetFlow Reporting : IPFIX Support

Over 100 SonicWALL field people have been brought up to speed on the IPFIX capabilities of their next generation firewall.  This includes training on configuring SonicWALL IPFIX and NetFlow.

“As a Sonicwall system engineer, I’d have to say the level of support and rich reporting Scrutinizer provides to SonicWALL customers is phenomenal. So far, Scrutinizer is the only product on the market to report on all the unique template data we export via IPFIX. For example, Sonicwall is able to provide insight to actual users, applications (not just port based ones), urls, IPS events, and tons more via IPFIX. This functionality really helps network admins with regards to troubleshooting, reporting, and capacity planning. Further, Scrutinizer provides additional situational awareness of securtiy and network events with the Flow Analytics module.” Rob Andrews – SonicWALL Systems Engineer.

Sonicwall NetFlow Analyzer: IPFIX Support

Sonicwall NetFlow Analyzer: IPFIX Support

SonicWALL Traffic Analysis

The Sonicwall NetFlow Analyzer supports not only most industry standard IP flow protocols such as sFlow, jFlow, NetFlow, Flexible Netflow, and IPFIX, but it also specializes in sonicOS NetFlow reporting. It is, in my opinion, the best way to get the most out of SonicOS NetFlow.

Besides the traditional flow octets delta count, source and destination ports and source and destination IP addresses; SonicWALL brings more to the table. SonicWALL NetFlow support was introduced in SonicOS 5.8. Some benefits include network planning and monitoring, application and user monitoring, security analysis and more. Read more »

Understanding NetFlow and IPFIX Templates

Understanding NetFlow and IPFIX Templates

Since NetFlow is template-based, how does a collector know one template from another? The answer is simple, Intelligent Template Recognition ™. In short, a collector receives flows with packets and uses templates to decode the information in the packets. With Intelligent Template Recognition ™ it automatically knows how to name the templates. But how does the collector know how to name the template?
