NetFlow V9 Overview: Cisco routers that support NetFlow

NetFlow V9 Overview: Cisco routers that support NetFlow

In Part 6 of our NetFlow V9 overview series, I will be talking about the Cisco routers that support NetFlow and the IOS releases that you need to be deployed on to get NetFlow configured.

In this blog series we have seen how the NetFlow packets are delivered to the collector and what is contained within each packet. Now let’s take a look at the devices that we can export flows from. While the focus has been on Cisco devices, many new vendors have come on board with new template exports using NetFlow v9 or IPFIX that drastically enhance what was seen with NetFlow v5.

Here is a list of some Cisco devices that support NetFlow and whether they can be configured with traditional, Flexible NetFlow, or both.

Calculating NetFlow Volume

Calculating NetFlow Volume

Often these days, we’re asked for a general rule of thumb or guidelines that can help with calculating NetFlow Volume.  How much disk space should an average NetFlow Deployment consume. One of the biggest concerns is that exporting NetFlow (or one of its cousins) for Network Performance Analysis will have a drastic impact on the available bandwidth, CPU overhead on devices, or on the hard drives storing it. This is simply not true.

NetFlow Overview: What is a NetFlow Template Flowset?

In Part 3 of the NetFlow Overview series, I will be discussing the NetFlow Template Flowset.  In Part 1 I covered NetFlow basics, and then Scott addressed NetFlow Packet headers in Part 2 of this series.

The following definitions are taken from Cisco’s NetFlow Version 9 Flow-Record Format whitepaper.

Catalyst 6509 NetFlow Support

Catalyst 6509 NetFlow Support

Catalyst 6509 NetFlowCatalyst 6509 NetFlow support is essential, especially when the switch is set up as a core network device; this blog should help you get started with NetFlow traffic monitoring on 6500 series switches.

Enabling NetFlow on a 6509 is slightly different from the traditional IOS NetFlow setup. Here you need to keep in mind that NetFlow on the MSFC is collected in software, and on the PFC it is collected in hardware.  Beside the familiar IOS NetFlow commands,  Cisco 6509 NetFlow also requires enabling NDE in order to export flow statistics to the collector. Barracuda IPFIX Support: Network Threat Detection

Earlier this year Barracuda Networks enabled IPFIX support on their NG Series firewalls. This export provides great visibility into your network traffic as well as network Threat Detection.

Let’s take a moment to go over the configuration to get these exports going:

FatPipe WARP: NetFlow Support

FatPipe WARP: NetFlow Support

Just discovered, FatPipe NetFlow support is available on FatPipe’s WARP 5.2 high-speed clustering device. We are in the process of checking out this export to see if they are exporting any additional information beyond the NetFlow v5 tuple. I’m sure the developers at FatPipe are discussing exporting IPFIX to report on their patent pending SmartDNS and Inbound line failover, as well as their WAN optimization. As WARP is currently exporting NetFlow v5, Scrutinizer supports their export. Read more »

UDP Forwarding: Network Monitoring Solutions

Posted in Netflow Traffic Analysis on May 16th, 2012 by Paul
UDP Forwarding: Network Monitoring Solutions

It’s common to need UDP forwarding to replicate UDP packets to all of your network monitoring solutions. Being the developers of NetFlow analysis software we have UDP NetFlow replication sending NetFlow packets to multiple development and production servers. This can be a challenge as most NetFlow exporters only send NetFlow packets to two different destinations. As a result of this, we are now selling an all in one UDP replicator appliance with a web based interface that can be configured from anywhere.
