UDP Forwarding: Network Monitoring Solutions

Posted in Netflow Traffic Analysis on May 16th, 2012 by Paul

It’s common to need UDP forwarding to replicate UDP packets to all of your network monitoring solutions. Being the developers of NetFlow analysis software we have UDP NetFlow replication sending NetFlow packets to multiple development and production servers. This can be a challenge as most NetFlow exporters only send NetFlow packets to two different destinations. As a result of this, we are now selling an all in one UDP replicator appliance with a web based interface that can be configured from anywhere.

Catalyst 3750 NetFlow Support : Flexible NetFlow Collector

Posted in Netflow Traffic Analysis on March 28th, 2012 by Jimmy W

Are you looking for Catalyst 3750 NetFlow Support?  Unless you own the X model (i.e. Catalyst 3750X) you will need to span a port to an nBox, a SonicWALL in bridge mode or similar.  The Catalyst 3750X NetFlow support is only available if you have invested in the 3KX module.  Without the 3KX, this switch only supports Smart Logging and Telemetry Flexible NetFlow exports.

NetFlow v5 gave us great insight into network traffic, then NetFlow v9 gave us more, then Flexible NetFlow was more, well, flexible, and, now I ask, “How does IPFIX vs NetFlow compare?”

Sonicwall NetFlow Analyzer: IPFIX Support

SonicWALL Traffic Analysis

The Sonicwall NetFlow Analyzer supports not only most industry standard IP flow protocols such as sFlow, jFlow, NetFlow, Flexible Netflow, and IPFIX, but it also specializes in sonicOS NetFlow reporting. It is, in my opinion, the best way to get the most out of SonicOS NetFlow.

Besides the traditional flow octets delta count, source and destination ports and source and destination IP addresses; SonicWALL brings more to the table. SonicWALL NetFlow support was introduced in SonicOS 5.8. Some benefits include network planning and monitoring, application and user monitoring, security analysis and more. Read more »

Do you need an Enterasys NetFlow Collector?

Well, if you have Enterasys S-Series switches exporting Hi-Fidelity NetFlow, adding advanced NetFlow analysis to your network management toolset increases the value of that investment.

Juniper IPFIX Support: DSCP Problems

Juniper IPFIXIt is nice to see calls on Juniper IPFIX support start to roll in. The other day I had a customer call in who was seeing unexpected DSCP values in our netflow network traffic analyzer, many of them were “23456”. This raised the question whether somehow the traffic analysis tool was not deciphering AS numbers correctly or whether it was a Juniper IPFIX problem.

Advanced Traffic Analysis: NetFlow Probe

Posted in Netflow Traffic Analysis, Network Traffic Analysis on January 4th, 2012 by Paul
advanced-traffic-analysis-netflow-probe

NetFlow probes allow for advanced traffic analysis in areas of your network that don’t have the required hardware to export NetFlow data. While I was on a support call with one of our customers they showed me a map of their NetFlow probe implementation and I was in awe with how many Windows NetFlow probes and Linux NetFlow probes that they’ve deployed on their network to allow for advanced NetFlow traffic analysis.

IP Host Monitoring with NetFlow

ip-host-monitoring-with-netflow

Today I would like to discuss IP host monitoring with NetFlow. Often times, network administrators need to monitor activities of a particular host on a network during a specific period of time. In this blog I intend to show how this can be accomplished in practice.

A true NetFlow, IPFIX, or Flexible NetFlow Analysis software is equipped with the ability to filter traffic on a specific host or a subnet permitting the admin to determine:

  • IP addresses or subnets the host is communicating with
  • The utilized bandwidth
  • Protocols associated with the host’s traffic
  • Applications this host is using
