I’m told that Riverbed® Cascade® Flow has introduced latency metrics to their NetFlow exports.  With this new information, we can possibly report on latency between hosts, application latency and even latency involving services in the cloud (i.e. Monitoring Cloud Performance).

Back in March a bunch of us at Plixer and a few customers went snowmobiling in Greenville, Maine. This is the 3rd year in a row we have done this and I think this year’s trip was equally eventful. Events along the way included beautiful scenery, down trees across the trail that we had to lift up, evening dinner at local restaurants, wild life, a few guys getting stuck and just about anything else you might run into on a snowmobile trip. As indicated in this excerpt from the NetworkWorld article on Obama and IPv6, we have reached a critical stage in IPv4 internet address usage.

“IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses and can support 4.3 billion devices connected directly to the Internet. IPv6, on the other hand, uses 128-bit addresses and supports a virtually unlimited number of devices — 2 to the 128th power.

About 94.5% of IPv4 address space has been allocated as of Sept. 3, 2010, according to the American Registry for Internet Numbers, which delegates blocks of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses to carriers and enterprises in North America. Experts say IPv4 addresses could run out as early as December but will certainly be gone by the end of 2011.”

It’s quite clear this is an urgent issue to address.  But it also raises other issues.

While attending CeBit in Germany last March, I was able to meet our German reseller, TCC Gmbh, as well as our Nordic reseller, Plan Two. These types of meetings are important for two reasons. The first is being able to put a face with a name. Knowing who you are talking to and being able to associate that person with a physical meeting can go a long way in helping that relationship grow. The second is market understanding. In the international arena, having strong resellers who understand their client’s needs, as well as their country’s laws and regulations is necessary. It is the only way you can ensure growth in that country.

This month, I had the privilege of meeting with our largest UK reseller, Teneo.

The World Cup kicks off in two days and trust me, the IT managers are concerned. The potential load on corporate networks is enormous and with an event of this magnitude it could possibly cause expensive downtime. With statistics like 54% of Britains are planning to watch the World Cup on company computers, you can see why it is important to pay attention to your company’s Internet Usage Policy now.

Jim Martin from ExpertReview.com wrote a blog that points out some of the scary statistics about corporate employees and network usage during the games.

“The survey of 2,000 workers also found that most people had given no thought to the possible consequences on their own workplace.”  The article then goes on to say, “IT networks. More than half those polled did not know whether their organization had any restrictions or guidelines in place to stop them accessing sites to watch the tournament.”
