Cisco Performance Routing Netflow Reports

Posted in Cisco Medianet, Cisco NetFlow, General, Netflow Detective, Network Traffic Monitor on March 8th, 2012 by jimmyd

Cisco Performance Routing isn’t your grandfather’s routing. Cisco Performance routing (PfR for short) considers a particular path’s traffic characteristics when determining the best path for the conversation. Imagine being able to use actual delay, packet loss, MOS, jitter and more to give your router a better idea of the traffic conditions. With that data it can make a smart decision on how to route the conversation traffic. Add to that the ability to report on this with something simple like Netflow and you have solution that sounds to good to be true. Well, it isn’t!

Monitoring Cisco Telepresence with NetFlow or in this case Flexible NetFlow is a straight forward process if you have to important factors in place.

  1. Configure the Cisco performance reporting. This gets the router to start monitoring Cisco Telepresence.  To do this, the configuration of the router must include certain commands.  Contact us for the command set.

NetFlow Collection: What is Packet Loss

Posted in Network Traffic Analysis, Packet Loss on December 14th, 2011 by Paul
netflow-collection-what-is-packet-loss

What is Packet LossWhat is packet loss and how do I troubleshoot packet loss with NetFlow and IPFIX? I remember when I was growing up we had a satellite connection for our television and when we would get a big snow storm while watching a movie the quality would become so poor that the movie would look like the image in this post and the movie would become unwatchable. We can attribute the poor video quality to network packet loss, as it’s hard to send network traffic through a blizzard.

flexible-netflow-tips-and-tricks

A few Flexible NetFlow tips and tricks could give you a new network traffic analysis perspective! Flexible Netflow is the latest improvement to the Cisco IOS Netflow technology. Most Cisco articles call it the next generation in flow technology. It “provides enhanced optimization of the network infrastructure, reduces costs, and improves capacity planning and security detection beyond other flow based technologies available today.” Here are a few great things that Flexible NetFlow can bring to the table.

A. Its configurable flow information allows the user to perform customized traffic identification and the ability to focus and monitor specific network behavior. This feature is key to network infrustrature optimization. For example, when there is high flow volume, the user can choose to enable flow sampling or export only certain traffic information.

How To Discover Quality of Service (QoS) in NetFlow

Posted in Cisco Medianet, NetFlow, NetFlow Analyzer, Network Monitoring, Network Problem Resolution, Network Traffic Analysis on November 9th, 2011 by Jimmy W
how-to-discover-quality-of-service-qos-in-netflow

Important NetFlow TrafficDid you know that you can find quality of service (QoS) information in NetFlow? Knowing what quality of service your crucial network traffic gets can either make or break an efficient infrastructure. Due to its importance, certain traffic may be given a higher priority. Crucial business applications, for example, need higher priority than normal traffic, while social networks can receive low priority. Is there a way to easily find this information? Absolutely!
