Posted in NetFlow Analyzer, Netflow Detective on August 31st, 2009 by jimmyd

netflow_detectiveIt was a warm day here at the office – warmer then most. I was getting up to get a drink of water when she walked in. She was a beautiful dame, but in my world they are all beautiful. This one was different. She had a mission. She needed something.

surfing-and-beach-fun-with-family

Despite a rainy start to summer it has finished up quite nicely here in Southern Maine.  Last weekend my friend Mark and his family joined mine and we headed off to Kennebunk Beach

Hurricane Bill had caused the biggest waves we’ve seen this season and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get out there and see if I could ice some of the awesome swells rolling into Kennebunk Beach. Read more »

NetFlow configs for multicast traffic…You know you want to

Posted in NetFlow, Network Traffic Analysis on August 28th, 2009 by nathanh
netflow-configs-for-multicast-traffic-you-know-you-want-to

Now that everyone has dipped their feet into the NetFlow Collector waters and gotten comfortable, it’s time to shake things up and introduce some more NetFlow config goodness.

Due the rise of multimedia multicast application usage and bandwidth consumption it’s becoming more and more important to monitor these links and traffic types.

But did you know that if you are running with NetFlow v5, not all of your multicast traffic is being counted?

With v5, the router does not count the amount of times that the one multicast packet may have been replicated. Nor does it log the unique outbound IP after replication, since v5 does not support egress monitoring.

As a result, you will be missing a lot of your multicast traffic.

This is part 5 of a 4-part series on the ToS field (i.e. Differentiated Services Field) of IP frames. :) Yes, yes, it is the running joke in the office on how this 4-part blog actually has 5 parts. Heck, it’s a blog… who cares.
Make sure you have already read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 of this blog.

Once again, I’ll pull in the WireShark capture from my first blog: Read more »

the-low-down-on-cisco-asas-netflow

We just released the new Scrutinizer 7.0 and finished shooting the new NetFlow Rap video. Things have been crazy here at work.

I just saw a tweet asking how NetFlow is handled on the ASA. Since Scrutinizer handles the flow from the ASA, I though I would post the information I have from Cisco explaining how NetFlow is handled in the ASA.

making-the-video-netflow-rap-style

Just a few weeks ago we announced that Mix Master Mitch was back in the studio recording a follow up to his hit single “NetFlow Rap.” MMM fans will be excited to know that mixing and final production on the song is finished. Today the IT rap star kicked off shooting for the video and there was no shortage of network traffic analysis rhymes.

To help build the hype of what is sure to be the biggest thing to happen to the Internet since March Madness online video streams, I thought I would give a little peek behind-the-scenes.

Yahoo! thinks you need to change…

yahoo-thinks-you-need-to-change

It’s Friday and I’m still working on my first cup of coffee, so I’m gonna go “easy mode” today and just post something not NetFlow related that I found rather humorous online.

It’s no secret in business that if you want people to endorse your product/cause, throwing a little money their way can go a long way. Bribery is not a new concept.

However, every once in awhile you have people who try to play both sides of the fence. It’s risky, but profitable I’m sure…

So sit back and enjoy some Yahoo! goodness.
